From Marketing to Targetted Advertising - Social Media is Evolving


For long, social media has been the favourite hunting grond for brands who have wanted to build a strong user base. However, Facebook's increasingly changing rules into advertising has really made a lot of dent in the recent times for brands who are looking to make the cut. 

The new model wherein brands had to pay to be visible hasn't quite worked in Facebook's favour. Many brands have gone around the roadblock by actually pushing promotional content on a regular basis. Facebook has finally decided to take a long hard look into this almost-spam and updated its policies. Thank god for that!

As a brand manager for one of the top Facebook pages from India, this should naturally concern me. After all, if I am getting the right content and pushing it with media to generate engagement, Facebook shouldn't come in my way, isn't it? However, I am not. I am glad that this update is finally set to roll from January.

So, how can brand managers deal with the imminent change and ensure that their page has adequate visibility online? Ditch the site altogether? No.

How JK Motorsports Hit the Digital Jackpot with #JKNoLimit




JK Tyre Motorsport just took a giant digital leap with #JKNoLimit.

One of the foremost motorsports events in the nation, the 17th JK Tyre Racing Championship practically became a platform to give fans, what they want - a chance at going up, close and personal with the fastest stars from India!

Their campaign was keenly watched online, with the race on-track being closely chased by the one online. I was happy to have closely monitored the campaign and regardless to say, they have practically taken every step right.

To take the motorsporting event digital, JK Motorsports created a microsite under the JK Motorsports website, where users were promted to "earn" their "license to limitless thrills". The website prompted users to sign-in via their Twitter profile and tweet using #JKNoLimit to become the fastest Tweeter for the event and earn prizes. The microsite was quite simple - having a leaderboard and a ticker displaying latest tweets about the event from users.

Majorly, JK Tyre went ahead and powered the campaign through videos, Twitter and Facebook. The campaign was neatly divided into three phases - Pre-launch, Launch, Post-Launch.

Pre-Launch





The pre-launch phase basically revolved around preparing the ground for the campaign. Posts on Facebook and Twitter went live three days before the campaign to build excitement. Users, evidently, became really excited for the contest. 3 teaser videos gave a very exciting feel to the event and were quickly shared across platforms.




Launch



This has probably been the best launch for a sporting event. For those on-the-go, the microsite offered live-feed of the event. To keep them from getting distracted, the microsite asked users to live-tweet the event from the comfort of their homes. This set the event apart and at the day of the event, practically everyone became a commentator. I witnessed the event closely throughout the day. JK Tyre had opened up the entire event to its fans. Fans stood a chance to flag off the race, wave the flag to finish the race, take a shot at the Grand Stand passes and even VIP passes.




JK Tyre gave special attention to sports bloggers and invited them to the paddock to get them a feel about the cars that they have desired to see and touch all their lives. My camera went crazy for the entire time I was there! 




And then came the BIG question - What about the numbers?

How Did it Fare?
On the day of the event, #JKNoLimit had received 17000+ mentions, reaching out to over 1.5 million people and a total impression of 64 million!  The campaign received a lot of positive reviews as well:






That's quite stunning, considering the fact that this isn't even the final round of the event. The final round of the JK Tyre Racing Championship takes place next month on the 13th and 14th at the Buddh International Circuit.

Facebook: Of Video Views and Depression


With the advent of smartphones and declining 3G data rates, videos views through mobile devices have increased. Facebook, naturally being the most popular social networking site, has benefited from this trend!

The popular networking site has claimed that over a billion videos are being watched daily. Since the past 1 year, this has grown by over 50%. Thanks to the smartphone penetration, bulk of these, 65% to be exact, are being watched through the mobile device! When you pit the number against the total users on Facebook monthly - a staggering 1.32 billion active users, you can clearly see that this trend is here to stay.

Facebook is giving videos importance on the newsfeed, well, the ones directly uploaded on Facebook and not re-shares from YouTube. While the entire world waits with bated breath for the iPhone launch scheduled to happen in the next 10 days, Google has sent out invitations for a September 15th event. The event, many say, will showcase Google's Android One sub-6000 smartphone.

The Smartphone Segment

With India's smartphone shipments growing at a healthy 84% in the last one year with a quarter-on-quarter growth of 11%, this is a logical step from Google. Banking on the immense success of Nexus and Moto range of smartphones, the entry-level smartphone segment really needs a big push. With IDC reporting that the sub-$200 space lighting up like fireworks in the coming few years, especially with many Indian consumers buying a smartphone for the first time, Google would naturally want to jump in.

How'd They Launch It?

To put it quite simply - Micromax has emerged as the leader in feature and smartphone shipment race and other players such as Karbonn and Spice have taken a major leap in technology as well. Even though Samsung leads in the smartphone segment, the 3 companies would definitely benefit a lot from Google's expertise and would help Google counter the balance.

It's About Credibility

When Google announced its Android One project in June, everyone agreed with India being the chosen destination for the launch. The audience has primed for a smartphone revolution. Firefox wanted to take an early lead into this race with its Rs.2300 smartphone. However, it was too soon. Google has been around for quite some time and will be the preferred choice for customers who are looking to jump from Feature to Smartphones.

Amazon Fire Phone Review: All Smoke?

With Amazon Fire Phone, the company has really jumped into the smartphone war. It was interesting to see the company announcing the phone without subsidizing through the carrier. The 32GB model comes with a hefty price tag of $199 from AT&T. With that kind of money, the iPhone 5S can come to you quite easily. With the price clearly putting Amazon’s flagship (and first) phone against the iPhone 5S, it brings us to the question – Is it all smoke?

Hardware
Amazon has been absolutely brilliant with the hardware of the phone. The phone features a 720p 4.7” IPS LCD screen. That might not be much, considering the kind of Android awesomeness that’s there in the market these days. But this phone has a pixel density of 312PPI, which is quite close to the iPhone 5S’ 326PPI.

Processor
With the 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor powering this phone accompanied with Adreno 330 GPU, you might feel this might not be the fastest phone in the market. Looking at the paper, you might be right. The fastest is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801. However, with the kind of apps that you download and the kind of usage, it might not make quite a lot of difference to an average user.

Camera
The Fire Phone has a 13 Mp rear and 2MP front camera. Now, that should be quite awesome for those who are thinking about getting their hands on one of these. However, there might be surprises. Merely packing more megapixels might not fetch the desired results in that selfie that you take.

Operating System
I strongly have a feeling the Fire OS is headed the BB10 way. I’d be happy to be proved wrong on this one. This is an interesting blend of Amazon OS. The store might be very different with many apps that might not be available in other Android devices. However, if you are really a huge fan of Amazon products, this might be a good bet. 

Verdict
While the Amazon Fire clearly has the qualities to stand out, it still has a long way to become the primary device choice for many. Plus, Amazon hasn’t been able to make a mark in the emerging markets like India. So, it’s going to be interesting to see how the company fares with the Amazon Fire.

Social Media Strategy: Where Are You Going Wrong?

With companies thinking about creating a presence online, there are a number of issues that need to be addressed before you should even post a single update from your official handle. Social media strategy is pretty important and you need to focus on the actuals before really going ahead with it. 

So, what are the steps that you need to take in order to ensure that your social media basics are taken care of? Here are some of them:

No Clear Objective
Be very clear about the reason you are going to be online. Is it going to be all about focusing on retouching base with the exsting customers or finding new ones, your objectives will decide on the entire social media policy. So, be very sound about it. An unclear objective may spell doom when it comes to quarterly review. 

Lack of ORM Policy
ORM or Online Reputation Management is crucial if you have a big business in the offline world. When you are thinking about creating a presence, there might be instances when you are pounded by customers online who may need immediate redressal, all of them! Be sure to create a separate department to handle your queries as the promotions team won't be the right ones to back things up.

No/Absurd Media Budget
With Facebook doing away with PTAs, you should think about allocating a proper budget for your Facebook presence. The cost per exposure is still very low compared to traditional media. So, you might just well use it to get the initial traction. Get a deep analysis about your market and reach out to them on a regular basis. Don't sit ideal till your competitors moves. It might just be too late.

No Content Policy
Every brand has pillars of topics on which they can talk about. Look around, sit with your brand team. Focus on the verticals that you have and get/generate content around it. Dishing out regular content becomes way easier when you know about the whole calender of events around the verticals that you want to focus on.

Poor Design
When you are on social media, the creatives should be aligned properly with the entire brand. You need to ensure that your design is of supreme quality and avoidable goof-ups such as Fonts/Colors/Tone are taken care of.

Why Your Organic Reach Will Fall (and How You Can Delay It)

Brands in the past two years have been locked in a fierce battle to get more fans. Those who have started late have bought, spammed their way to get more likes on their page. But as a manager, you might be thinking about what almost everyone else is thinking about right now - What Next?

So, you have invested a LOT of money on media and have gained followers on social networks, primarily Facebook, Twitter and Youtube but aren't getting a substantial increase in conversion. Then, there are some business owners who have complained about Facebook's recent policy changes that has resulted in a gradual slump in "Organic Reach". 

Bad News: There is nothing that can be done to stop it. 
Good News: It's for your brand's benefit

You see, Facebook is different than conventional media. Here, your audience is growing rapidly, with their own social networks growing rapidly. So, there are more brands competing for that elusive like and over-all reach. Hence, after a certain point of time, your brand will have to shift the strategy. A brand's focus initially is to get as many people to follow the brand and make conversions out of it. However, there is a limit to it. 

For example: At the early stages, you get a lot of exposure from your campaigns. Reach is easy and your brand has an effective reach of say 10,00,000. A couple of campaigns later, you are able to get a bulk of your TG in your brand. But then you effectively have nothing else to do except trying to get those who have consciously made a decision to stay away from your brand, hit that "Like". 

What Should You Do Instead?
Goes out without saying - stop focusing on just Likes. Your brand with a fan-base of 5m has a far better chance of getting more conversions that a competitor with 15m. How? 

Audience Metrics
Delve into the audience metrics. At the beginning of any campaign, get a clear set of goals with respect to what is the TG: The age, sex, location, interest. If your page has an audience of 15-year olds and you'd like to target some other, then do it in the beginning of the campaign than after. Saves money.

Don't Keep Social Secondary
Simply using the same creatives that you use on other media for Facebook isn't a best practice. Social strategy should be different than your media strategy. The kind of images that you use should compliment the TG that you're targeting.

Content Style
Agreed, there is no way to beat the organic slump. However, certain tweaks can help you buck the trend and land up on your audience's news feed organically. The content styling, from contests to polls will help you get more people to engage with your posts. Hence, don't let out posts that don't call your audience to action. Avoid them like plague!

The Importance of Images
The creatives that you use in your posts should be attractive, with less text and content that initiates a user to act. That help you get the early likes and consequently allow you to gain more traction organically. 

The MOBILE Game-changer
With 80% of Facebook's users accessing the website from mobile devices, there is no need to point the diminishing importance of stamp ads on the right of the desktop website. Instead, focus your money on news-feed posts. It's ONLY the news-feed promoted posts that land up on mobile devices. 

Take-Away
Organic reach is on its way out. What you can do instead is to focus your media efforts for mobile and you fan base to be of high quality and not just huge numbers.

Being over 4 years into the content development industry, I have witnessed a categorical shift in content development. Social media was still some time away and Search engine optimizers were busy getting backlinks and stuffing keywords randomly into the articles. As a creative-first writer, it was beginning to look increasingly vague, the idea of creatively written content.

Then Google came and categorically changed the landscape for good. Content development needed a rational approach, with more focus on the quality than the quantity. Issues like 4% keyword insertion in the articles we wrote took a sort of a backseat. However, focusing on the keyword kept on being as important as it was.

So, how can you write content that sells?

Writing content requires a thorough understanding of the subject. In this blog post that I try to keep as thorough as possible, I'll give you some workable tips. This will help you bring traffic through the content that you generate for your brand.

The Basics
